What Russ Ford has to say about Sam:
"Sam was the very first run in the original stockdog futurity, and I still have a video tape of the run. He had the ability to rate stock very well and also worked with eye. The most interesting thing about him was that he could get into a storm with testy cattle and as soon as he got them where he wanted them switch gears back to a slow trot. He was large by today's standards but very athletic. We even showed him in conformation and he won a few puppy classes.
Sam may have been the nicest Aussie I ever owned. He was horse kicked in the head when he was about three months old. After he recovered it never slowed him down. I have always laughed that after the futurity I earned his first leg on cattle and maybe sheep. Anyway I had to go back to work and Terry Martin got his second legs. Not bad for a young dog to get his titles under someone who had never worked him. He earned his open titles in the minimum number of runs. Back in those days if you had an RD you could start in any class so we bypassed started and open ducks. He had an ATDs and ATDd in 1985 but it took me almost another year to get his final cattle leg. We also went high combined score at the Palestine TX trials against Tony Rhone, Don Donham, Red, and Steve. In other words when he finally got it, it was against the best in the country."
